Don't be like NSG! Avoid these FIVE FOODS at the supermarket!

NSG headed to the supermarket...

After working her butts off throughout the day, She headed to the roadside to buy her regular dinner of chicken and chips -the ajekpako version of C&C...  i.e aboki fried yam & chicken which cost roughly N300 -(Chicken N200, yam N100).

NSG starts to crave...

As soon as she got into the supermarket, she noticed an ajebota family (The man, his little daughter, and his wife) pulling a cart of groceries and licking a stick sweet while they shopped. The sweet looked really tempting and I started craving for one.

She picked the coke from the fridge and went to the counter to pay when she saw her new favorite gum, the N50 trident!

 NSG gets tempted...

Close to where the Trident lay, she saw different colours of the sweet the ajebota family were licking and since she has never paid more than N30 for a sweet, she decided to add one to her cart containing the coke and gum and gave the counter lady her N500.

The counter-lady packaged her stuff and handed her a balance of N140...  And She, first of all, checked to see if her head  was correct, Lol. Because she could not understand why her balance was N140...:-)

 NSG finally realise...

She took a look at her receipt and found out the sweet she had assumed to cost N30, cost N210!
-Twice as high as the coke! Her intestines started hurting!
Her money for dinner gone because of her long throat! Lol.
She was too weak & embarrassed to fight over N210 as there were other customers behind her, so she left the supermarket with a broken spirit..#Awww

NSG at home...

Few minutes later, she was sitting at the dining miserably, licking her 'very bitter sweet' (why won’t it be bitter considering what happened?) and sipping the coke.

While thinking about a family of 3, on the other side of town, who were probably having a sumptuous dinner of spaghetti bolognese with chicken sauce & wine after an appetizer of stick sweet & coke... She sobs.

Chairlady of all the single girls in Nigeria, I hope it's not too late to say, SORRY? Hehe..:-)

Seriously, those were the chronicles of what happened to a satirist and lifestyle blogger, a couple of weeks ago!

In other to avoid falling victims of buying the same 'discretionary products' at the supermarket,

Here are five things to never let into your shopping cart:

You want to live healthy, huh?

Like, who doesn't? :-)

But, are you aware that consuming a lot of discretionary (canned) foods and drinks increases your risks of weight gain, obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and certain cancer? ...just to mention a few.

Before You freaked out, check out the Five Foods To Always Avoid At The Supermarket:

Disclaimer: The foods listed below have been produced under hygienic conditions by their various manufacturers, to serve the various purpose when consumed. The fact that they are listed here, doesn't label them as ''bad foods''.

Lollies: The raw fact about lollies is that: they'll will make us fat! Just 100 grams of jelly babies has over 1,400 kilojoules and over 50 grams of sugar, which is about ten teaspoons! Dump the lolly bag and swap to sugar-free chewing gum to save the kilojoules and your teeth.

Sugar and other fermentable carbohydrates from highly processed foods are major risk factors for both the start and progress of dental disease. The more lollies you eat, and the more often you eat them, the bigger the risk.

Biscuits: Can't drink your coffee/tea without biscuit? See, biscuit contains large amounts of unhealthy fats, highly processed carbohydrates and yes, large amounts of kilojoules!

So bestie, instead of going for a snack that is mostly low in fibre and whole grains, why not load up on fruit and save on kilojoules? Sounds good? Yay!  One cup of strawberries has 150 kilojoules, a small bunch grapes 350 kilojoules and a medium banana 365 kilojoules.

Still thomassing? Do you know two cream-filled biscuits contain around 860 kilojoules? The choice is yours..:-)

Sugar-sweetened drink: In a trial of over 15,000 adults who were followed up for 15 years, researchers found drinking one or more cups of soft drink a day increased the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 29%, compared to drinking less than one glass a month... As my bestie, I'd implore to swap to diet drinks, or soda water if you want the fizz without the kilojoules.

Or Better still, drink water. Unless you’re an elite athlete, plain water is all you need during sport.

Processed meat: Keep processed meat for when there are no other choices available. Whenever possible, load up with tomatoes and mushrooms, and swap the breakfast bacon for an egg with baked beans and a mixed vegetable grill.

Grab a pack of fresh chicken breast and cook it for use on sandwiches, or buy reduced-fat cheese, canned tuna and salmon, or small cans of four-bean mix.

If you have a recipe that calls for chopped bacon, replace it with diced browned onion and garlic, mixed with a couple of tablespoons of sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds or pine nuts.

Processed meat products preserved by smoking, curing, salting or the addition of preservatives including nitrite, nitrates, phosphate, glutamate or ascorbic acid. They include bacon, ham, pastrami, salami, corned beef, chorizo, devon, fritz, luncheon meats, some sausages, hot dogs, cabanossi and kabana.

Too much intake of processed meats=high risk of bowel cancer!

Crisps: So, to wrap it all bestie, I know Your love for this popular snack in the developed world, but, You may wants to break-up with crisps-of-all-kind and go for a healthy low-kilojoule alternative, which is air-popped popcorn.

Popcorn is whole grain, more satisfying and cheap. One cup of air-popped popcorn has 150 kilojoules, compared to 550 kilojoules in a 25-gram individual packet of potato crisps. This approximately 400-kilojoule saving is the equivalent of the energy burned up in about a 25-minute walk.

Okie dokie, It's complete! :-)

Beautiful blog-bestie, to sum this "long" post of mine up:

AVOID SUGAR!  and You'd find yourself on a track to a long, healthy life!
